One Voice - Church Choir Performance

After two gruelling nights of rehearsals and lots of glitches, tonight's performance was superb! At least according to those who went to watch it. I did not know how my choir performed, but when I sneaked in to watch the rest of the choirs, it was really great! The songs were wonderful and the singing was full of emotion and soulfulness. Whoever said Catholic songs are not as beautiful and catchy as compared to Christian songs?

There was a variety too - of skits, action songs, a ca pella, strumming and singing, songs in other languages. The sequence of events were as follows :

1. My choir (I sing for the Sunday 10:30am choir)
2. The Sunday 8:45am choir
3. The Sunday 6:30pm choir (a ca pella)
4. The Saturday 6:00pm choir
5. The Mandarin Choir (Sunday 7:00am)
6. Guest choir
7. Intermission of ten minutes
8. Songs by the Cantor Ministry (For those who do not know, the cantors are those who sing out a certain reading in church with the choirs as backup. Some churches have their own cantors whereas some use one of the better choir members as cantors.)
9. The Sunday 12:15pm choir
10. Filippino Choir
11. Indonesian Choir
12. The Saturday 4:45pm choir
13. One Voice - the combined voices of everyone

There was even an opening hymn sung by our parish priest and the closing after the combined voices sung by another priest! I must say, the priests in my church are pretty talented and with very good voices too!

Finally it was over. All the hardwork and practices are worth it! That is what happens during a performance - one gripe about the commitment and time put in, but in the end, everything is worth it especially when everyone loves you! And that is why I love to perform because I find that it is a real joy to make others happy and inspired!

Choral Performance Again

Time really flies. Half a year already. And now it is July. I will be performing for the church this Saturday. It has been so long since I last performed on stage, be it singing or playing musical instruments. How I miss those days, although now I think I am in no position to perform anymore.

Still, this upcoming choral performance is making me nervous. There will always be some butterflies before any performance. What if I sang wrongly and everyone could hear it? What if I tripped and fell flat on my face? What if I got so nervous that I got stage fright and fainted on stage?

Even though I love performing, it is inevitable to have some nervousness before that. Tonight will be the technical rehearsal, with the full-dress rehearsal tomorrow and the actual performance on Saturday. Tonight will be the first time all the choirs and singing groups of the church come together and do their rounds. I really wonder how it will be like!

A Night Of Dream And Music

We attended a concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir last night. It was a rendition of Felix Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, where he wrote his music based on Shakespeare's famous play.

It was a rather unique concert as in the orchestra and narrator was the focal point of the whole performance. Where other renditions would focus on either the entire orchestra, or else the chorus singers, this concert had the narrator speaking lines from the play, then the music started, and the narrator would go on stage and had a one man show, speaking out the lines from the play while the music played on and accompanied.

At certain intervals, fairies were mentioned, so two soloists came out and sang their parts. The choir only played a small role, their total stage time was about five minutes the most, so they were always in the background while the orchestra played on and the narrator acted on.

I love the last part where the play came to the part of the three marriages - Duke Theseus and the Amazonian queen, Lysander and Hermia, and Demetrius and Helena. That was where the grand Wedding March came in. How could I ever forget this song? It has always been and is always a grand song to march in to when one gets married!

Overall, it was a superb performance, refreshing and great! Kudos to the performers for captivating the audience so well!

An Evening Of Opera And The Musical Victor / Victoria

Last weekend was a weekend of great music. On Saturday night, I went for an operatic concert, consisting of excerpts from various operas. It is called "An Evening Of Tragic And Romantic Love", presented by the Singapore Lyric Opera, so there was a soprano, mezzo, tenor and baritone, singing various parts from well-loved operas like "Aida", "Carmen" and "Samson and Delilah".

Their voices are stupendous! I have always been singing, but I really really wish I can sing like that! That has always been my wish! I really wonder how do people actually train up their voices to be able to sing this way?

The musical Victor / Victoria on Sunday is just as awesome! It is light-hearted, with pretty controversial themes that I am surprised the musical is open to all to see and not restricted, like Carbaret a few years back.

Again, the singing is good. Of course, those performing in musical theatres are not exactly full-fledged opera singers, but they are more rounded as in they can sing, dance, act all at one time! Since it was set during the jazz age, the dance steps were fantastic! Tap dancing, jazz dancing, the steps were very well-choreographed and all in sync!

It had been two great evenings of superb performances. I cannot wait to watch the next one!

The One And Only Maksim!

I have found Maksim's songs to be amazing since the first time I heard my friend play his CD. So when I found out he was performing here I bought tickets immediately. Luckily I managed to get discount from a certain card, and we managed to sit around the stall seats in full view of the stage.

Maksim outdid himself again. I love the way his fingers run! I really wish I can play like that! The way he plays the piano is just superb! It is as if his fingers are so light that they can glide along the piano just like that!

The only gripe is that he played mostly classical songs. Well, a concert pianist will play classical songs. what else? But he did not play any of his "specialty" songs, or those that made him famous. What he played, any other concert pianist could have played. I would kind of expect more from him.

Still, it was an awesome performance all the same! There was an encore and he came back and played one final song. This is also the first concert I have been to in a long while, that I did not go on my own.

When I asked if he would mind going to a Maksim concert, he said ok. However, I assumed he knew who Maksim is. It was only before the performance that I realise he has never heard of Maksim, save for the fact that he plays the piano. Hence I was quite taken aback that he was willing to go to a concert that he had no idea whether it would be good or not.

His reply was classic, "Because you want to go, and I know as long as it is something you want, it will definitely be of high quality." Awwww......

A Month Of Great Shows!

This year is a year of good concerts and musicals, and all the great artistes just happen to be performing here in November and December. Thus I cannot wait to see their performance! Coming up next week is Maksim, the piano genius. The one who has his own style in making a classical instrument sound so good!

Next up will be an evening of operatic love songs. Since I was a member of the Singapore Lyric Opera, how can I not support their production?

And then the long-awaited for Victor / Victoria! After all the hype about this show, I am finally going to catch it before it ends its run!

That would be the month of November. Then in December, it would be another great month of musicals and concerts! First up is the Mendessohn's Midsummer Night's Dream, by the Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonic Chamber Choir, by our very own famous conductor. His concerts are normally worth watching!

This next one was not in my plan initially, but with all the hype, I thought it would be good to see what it is like. So next up would be High School Musical!

Followed by the Michael Jackson Tribute concert. This is also not in my original plan, but since I know the dear idolises him, we decided to attend and see what songs there are.

Then the annual Christmas ballet performance. Last year it was Nutcracker, this year it is Swan Lake. Hopefully it will be better then the Nutcracker last year!

And that wraps up this year! As for next year, there are two upcoming major productions which I am thinking of catching. First is La Boheme, an opera by Giacomo Puccini - the same writer of Madame Butterfly. A rather famous local soprano will be in the lead role, so I must catch it!

And finally, the long-awaited for musical of the year - Chicago! After falling in love with the movie version, I simply cannot wait to catch the stage version!

Hopefully all the shows will not let me down!

A Roomful Of Music

I do not come from a musical family. I got sent to music classes at a young age, like a lot of others, but my parents do not really listen to music. They do not believe in buying cassette tapes or CDs, and only listen to music in the car. Even then, the music they listen to are Chinese oldies. So I was not exposed to English pop until secondary school age, when my classmates were gushing over New Kids On The Block, and the stupid me was asking in wide-eyed wonder, “What is NKOTB?” to the chagrin of my classmates.

Then I got exposed to Michael Jackson, Tommy Page, ABBA and various other pop artistes. After that, my musical tastes started getting more and more wide-ranged, even though I started having my own favourite kinds of musical genres. I used to listen to Perfect Ten 98.7, but now I listen mainly to Gold 90.5 (oldies – songs from the 80s and earlier), Class 95 (anything from ten years ago to about two years back, nostalgic songs) and Power 98 (catchier songs, hip hop, anything from the eighties), with the occasional Symphony 92.4.

Because I listen to primarily English songs now judging from the kinds of CDs I have, many are surprised I can belt out Mandarin tunes during karaoke sessions, because, well, I do not look like the type that can even speak Mandarin. I do have my own favourite Mando pop singers and songs too. Recently, I started listening to music again in my room. As I said, my parents do not buy cassette tapes, so we never listened to songs at home. We did not even have a radio or tape player! My parents viewed these as “unnecessary expenses”.

Thus when I finally got the Walkman I badgered for, I plugged in the earphones and listened to Perfect Ten 98.7 (latest hits) all day long. I listened while I was studying, while I was reading, while I was in the car when my parents were driving. My mum used to frown on me from listening to music, but that was my only source of entertainment since my mum banned me from watching television during school days, and she banned me from reading books when I was studying. I could not even go out with my friends or on my own! Without music, I would have been bored to death.

As the years went by, one guy I dated gave me a CD player. I could then buy CDs and tuned in to the radio at the same time. But it broke down after a year or so, so I got rid of it since it was too bulky for my liking anyway. Then later, another guy gave me a Phillips 3-in-1 clock-radio-CD player, with a unique alarm. The alarm can be set to a normal alarm, radio alarm or CD alarm, so I can wake up in the morning to my favourite tunes or favourite deejay.

I really like this gadget! It is small and handy too! My room started being flooded with music whenever I was around. Then work and other activities took over and I did not use that for more than a year. For some reason, I started preferring peace and quiet, would just like to sleep whenever I am in my room.

Until recently. I started listening to music again, started playing music in my room again. Why? No idea. I just find music soothing. I see the gadget sitting on my bedside dresser, and thought it would be a pity not to use it. Plus I have so many CDs and I do wish to listen to them all over again. Hence, I started my usual routine of bedtime music again.

It used to be a few things I must do at night – pray, read, listen to music, talk or message my loved one. Now the last one is off the routine, and for a long time, the rest were also off the routine. Thus I thought it would be good to get into the grind and start living again, after losing my direction for quite a period. There will definitely be more rooms full of music in the future!

O By Damien Rice

I was looking for the song "The Blower's Daughter", and found it in Damien Rice’s album O. Which makes me wonder, why have I never noticed this guy until now? He has a fantastic voice, he plays several instruments (including some of his tracks), and he writes all his songs! What a talent! I wanted to upload the entire song here, but for some reason, the video upload kept failing. :-( In any case, the MTVs are on top, so feel free to click on any video streams to hear the song!

His songs are all nice and soothing. Furthermore, his album cover and the little booklet that comes with it are all illustrated. His songs are recorded in a trailer on his own, together with his band of musicians and backup singers. The album indicates ten songs, but he has two hidden tracks in there too.

I am not about to switch my musical taste, but in my opinion, Damien Rice is great! At least he is one of the modern soloists who have a great voice, coupled with great lyrics and a soulful tune. In an era where hip hop and disco rock takes over ballads and country, it is rare to find someone who can carry out soulful tunes. Thus this is one guy to look out for!

Yellow Yellow

I always wondered about this song. Why the title? It means more than the colour of course, but just what exactly is it about?

One interpretation can be that the song represents things that are yellow, like the stars in the sky (do they even look yellow? I can never see the actual colour of stars), and the colour of the skin (probably referring to an Asian).

But there are certain things which I do not understand. Now why are the things done yellow? So even if a turn is to be taken, it would be a yellow turn? How to measure?

And in the seventh stanza, there is a phrase saying “For you, I bleed myself dry”. Now that sounds so much like Jesus’ crucifixion. Forgive me all those who love the song, but somehow I can never quite relate to the lyrics.

I am not saying I absolutely loathe the song. The tune is nice and catchy, and some of Coldplay’s tunes are really good. When I first heard this song, I thought it was catchy and rhythmic, but when I listened to the lyrics properly, I realized I had no idea what the song was about.

Then I gathered it is a love song of some sort, albeit an unorthodox one, but up to now, I still cannot relate to the lyrics, as some parts do not make sense.

On the other hand, a lot of modern song lyrics do not make sense anyway. The essential message is that of a lover to his loved one. And I guess that is one aspect of love, no matter how weird it is.

Music The Food For The Soul

I like to take this opportunity to give a tribute to my late teacher, who had just been cremated earlier on. She was the one that first exposed me to music and music education. She cultivated my love and interest in music, and exposed me to the different genres. She always gave me the hardest songs to play, lead roles in all the concerts and performances, and really stretched me to the fullest.

Because of her, I am able to play songs which I never thought I could; able to be involved in national performances which I never thought I could qualify; able to have my song composition selected as a teaching piece – something I never ever thought possible in my life.

Right now, I cannot imagine my life without music. My life has been so much more enriched ever since I discovered music, all those more than twenty years ago, when my mum first enrolled me into the Junior Music Course in one of the big music schools for keyboard lessons. Since then, I began a long journey of music playing and performing which had followed me all the way through right into my adulthood.

Ironically, I started playing music long before singing and dancing, yet through the years, I stop playing music that intensively, and concentrated on singing, and soon to be dancing as well. Now I think I should have continued playing. I cannot play as well anymore due to the very long sabbatical.

I find playing the piano really soothing and relaxing, especially in those stressful school years when I wanted to indulge in nice music and forget all my frustrations and stress. Playing the piano helps to bang all my stress away by running my fingers up and down the keys. And I always found it a challenge to try songs which are a level higher.

Playing the electronic organ (or electone) is much easier compared to the piano, except the feet are involved due to the pedals. An organ piece does not have as many running notes or block chords as a piano piece, nor are the organ keys as hard as the piano keys. Playing the organ is a good way of having a solo mini-concert, and swaying away to the rhythm, beat and sounds of the song is such a nice feeling. Those pop songs can really be brought to life in an organ piece!

I stumbled into singing quite by accident. I enjoyed those nursery rhymes and children’s songs which I used to sing in kindergarten, but I did not really like singing until Primary Three when we had to choose a school curricular activity. I did not know which one to choose out of so many choices.

In the end, I decided on violin. But my parents did not wish to buy me a violin on the basis that it is very expensive, and I have enough music lessons outside of school. So in the end, I was the only one in my class left without a school activity.

The week before all the curricular activities started, the teacher in charge came to my class and said another teacher wanted to see me on that Saturday about my curricular activity. I knew that teacher as the one in charge of choir, so I went to see her. And she told me that her choir needed people, and since I did not have an activity, she asked if I would like to join.

I did not even know what a choir was then, but since I needed a curricular activity, I agreed. And the next thing I knew, she took me to the music room, put me in front, and started the warm-ups, before distributing the songs we were supposed to sing.

At first it was just for fun, since the songs we were singing were lively and nice, and I could finally tell my form teacher that I, too, had a curricular activity. Then the following year, we were involved in the school’s anniversary concert at the Singapore Conference Hall auditorium. It was my first public choir performance.

No doubt before that I have performed in various concerts organized by the music school which my teacher sent me for, but the first public performance for the choir made me realise I never wanted to do anything else after that because I found it so fun to perform, and hearing applause after applause after you have performed was really lifting.

After this, the choir performed in Kallang Theatre, Victoria Theatre, Victoria Concert Hall, mostly as part of the National Day Sing Singapore competitions, but also sometimes as the Singapore Youth Festival’s Choral component. Subsequently, all the other choirs I joined were also heavily involved in performance, be it for the school’s Book and Music Week, or the Singapore Youth Festival’s Choral component, or International Choral Festivals, although I have never been chosen to perform overseas. :-(

I started performing more and more as well for my music school. Once in a while, there would be promotions at various shopping malls, and my teacher would always sign me up as one of the solo performers. She would also put me up for auditions and performances for the Singapore Electone Festival, or the Piano Festival, and she would also ask me to perform for her graduating classes as a promotion to the parents how continuing music education would be like.

My love for music really started due to the various stage exposures. After the first choral performance, I wanted to do it seriously, so I started being more serious in my music classes and more involved in the music activities of my school. Plus, all the music involvement could give me time off from studying all the time.

All the way until lower secondary, the only form of music I was exposed to was the music taught in school, the classical pieces and a bit of the pop songs from the music school, songs which my parents listened to, and songs from musicals like “Sound of Music”.

When “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera” performed here, I started to like the songs from the musical genre, which later enabled me convince my Principal in the school I was teaching in to organise a students’ outing to watch “Oliver!” and “Forbidden City”. And my parents know about my interest in musicals, so treated me to "Mamma Mia!" for my birthday in 2004.

Initially I could not relate to my secondary school peers on the songs they listened to, because my parents forbade any form of radio listening at home so I could concentrate on studying. Then when my dad gave me his old Walkman after buying a new one, I started to tune in to Perfect Ten and got to know the type of songs which my friends were all listening to at that period of time.

And I found that listening to music while studying actually improved my focus, concentration and mind. At least I was more alert to absorb what I was studying and able to do my homework better and faster, with lesser mistakes.

My classmates used to dedicate songs to each other on Perfect Ten. The then-deejay was Mark Richmond, everyone’s favourite deejay at that moment in time. I almost always laughed at his antics. I started to learn more about teenage life like dating (I was so sheltered that I had to resort to radio and conversations between my classmates to really know what was going on!), boyfriend dedicating songs to girlfriend and vice versa, expressing their feelings for each other, ex-boyfriend apologising over the radio to ex-girlfriend and requesting for another chance. I started to really live a life, instead of being so non-exposed, restricted and sheltered.

When I was finally able to watch movies with my friends, I got more exposed to the various movie music and soundtracks, some which have become my favourites of all time, and some which I did not really like. Through the years, I developed my own likes and dislikes to music. My musical tastes differ in the different stages of my life, through various influences. There are certain types of music which I like, and certain types which I will never listen to.

Throughout university, I listened to Class 95 and Gold 90.5. I started liking oldies more than modern rap or pop. I find slow rock, classical, folk songs, jazz, new age, alternative, and soothing movie soundtracks more my cup of tea than hard rock or disco pop.

My ex-boyfriends and I used to dedicate songs to each other through Class 95. We would tune in to the late-night programme, where there would be four hours of Class 95 Love Songs, then send a message via mobile to the deejay and dedicate whichever song was on the list, together with a short message on why we loved each other. Quite corny now, come to think of it, but those days were really good.

Now I have my own favourite genres of music. I listen to as many songs as possible, but there are some songs that I will listen to more. Music really enriches my mind, body and soul, and I cannot imagine how to survive without it.

All because of one person who exposed me to music and cultivated my interest in it. I went back to performing partly because of her. When I heard about her illness, I felt I had to do something to pay her back for what she had taught me.

So hence, although a bit too late, but I still want to dedicate this song to her. It is one of my ultimate favourite songs, which always brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear the song. The song touches me, heart and soul, and I hope the song will touch her too, wherever she is right now.

An Evening Of Hollywood Music

K and I went to the Esplanade to watch a concert by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, conducted by Erich Kenzel. It was a collection of the best movie theme songs. This is the first time I managed to attend a concert of only soundtrack and movie songs. Although the tickets were expensive, but we managed to get the stall seats, almost in front of the stage.

Tip of the day : Never choose the seats right at the corners of the stall. If you have to sit in the stall seats, choose the middle seats. I emerged with a sore neck after the first half. After the intermission, K and I decided to move a few places to the back where we could see more of the performers and not strain our necks.

The orchestra started with a grand Olympic Fanfare, followed by a medley of Disney Classics - "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" from "Song Of The South", "Chim Chim Cheerie" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from "Mary Poppins", "Mickey Mouse Club" and "It's A Small World". "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic" followed next, and the conductor put in the theme from "Lawrence of Arabia" as a bonus.

The first half ended with medley of songs from Disney films like "Beauty And The Beast" and "Aladdin". At this juncture, there was even a baritone who came out to croon all the songs. The first half was good as I could really imagine watching the shows while listening to the tunes. Especially for the "Titanic" tune, I could still remember crying over Jack Dawson dying and urging Rose to live on.

The second half consisted of more songs from various shows like "Star Trek", "Apollo 13", "Lord Of The Rings", "The Godfather", "Mission Impossible", "Goldfinger" and a medley of John Williams' hits like "Jaws", "Harry Potter", "E.T.", "Superman" and "Star Wars". The tunes were all abridged from the original soundtracks. I was not very impressed with "Lord Of The Rings" as I feel that the original tune from the movie is ten times better. "The Godfather" was not tragic enough as well. They played a tragic tune into something more light-hearted.

The program stated "Phantom Of The Opera", but in the end that was substituted with "Cats". Actually I was waiting to hear "Music Of The Night" but somehow "Memories" took over. And the two songs I really wanted to hear - "Forrest Gump Suite" and "Chariots Of Fire" were not played.

Tomorrow's program will consist of songs from more classic movies like "Ben Hur", "Gone With The Wind" and "Dr Zhivago". A pity we only bought tickets to one show and not both. But overall, it was a pretty good performance. Soundtrack music, especially good soundtrack music, is beautiful, soothing and inspirational in nature. Like the saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words, but in this case, music, as in real good music, consists of a thousand pictures.

Bang On A Can - The Concert

"Bang On a Can" consists of 6 members – a clarinettist, percussionist, electric guitarist, pianist, bassist and cellist. Imagine a fusion of classical and pop instruments making beautiful music together. Their music has very catchy rhythms and all the musicians really synchronized well together. The instruments just flowed together beautifully. They played a total of 6 songs and I loved the last 2 pieces – "Spells" and "Workers Union". The first song they played was entitled "Cheating, Lying, Stealing" which my friend remarked was suitable for the soundtrack of "Closer". Upon reflecting, I agree, since the theme of the song matched exactly the theme of the movie.

"Spells" reminded me of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible". How appropriate, isn't it? The dark theme of the Salem witch trials of the 17th century. "Workers Union" was a very intense piece. There was a part where the pianist was banging on the piano with her elbows instead of running her fingers over it. I salute her technique and skill! There was a part where the song made me feel like going on strike!

Thanks a lot, friend, for recommending this show. I really enjoyed myself. It is a very good alternative musical experience which I will never forget.
